Trailblazers in the Art World: Thelma Golden

Helming the Studio Museum in Harlem, NY since 2005,  Ms. Golden continues to utilize her platform to promote artists that bring a unique, progressive perspective to the art space.  Numerous awards have been bestowed upon Ms. Golden including the 2016 Audrey Irmas award for Curatorial Excellence.  Her vision is currently responsible for bringing to life the new Studio Museum installation in Harlem, NY.

A decade-long post at the Whitney Museum most certainly prepared her to take the reins after her successor retired from the post she now holds.  One of her most significant accomplishments, though there are many, was creating “one of the most sought after residency programs” in the art world.

She sits on numerous boards including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art whose aim aligns with her own-to provide a platform for artists at all levels to make significant contributions to the advancement of African-American art in the museum space.

Ms. Golden holds a bachelor of arts degree in art history and African American studies from Smith College and honorary doctorates from the City College of New York, among others, and was awarded a medal of distinction from Bard College in 2009.

In addition, Ms. Golden is an active lecturer and panelist on the topic of contemporary art and culture at preeminent installations in the art and its adjacent industries.
